Evidence shows that seeing the same GP and healthcare team regularly leads to better health outcomes. By registering with MyMedicare, general practices and patients are mutually agreeing that they have an ongoing care relationship, an important foundation for continuity of care and more integrated, person-centred care. MyMedicare, alongside other changes aims to strengthen Medicare for all Australians, and provide additional benefits for patients, and benefits for general practices and healthcare providers.
MyMedicare is voluntary and aims to strengthen the relationship between patients, their general practice, GP, and the wider primary care team. General practices can register through PRODA, and patients can register quickly and easily through Medicare Online or the Express Plus Medicare Mobile app, These digital systems also provide access to a range of other useful information for patients such as Medicare card details, make or track Medicare claims, add new family members (babies), safety net information and organ donation information. Patients can also register by completing a paper registration form and returning this to their general practice.
MyMedicare registration is an essential preliminary step that must occur before a practice or a patient can participate in the General Practice In Aged Care Incentive.
